Summer Reading

What have you read this summer?
Here's my list:

The Space Beween Us

by Thrity Umrigar

If you are into eastern culture's and learning more about the class system in India...This is for you! The book delves into the complicated female relationships of the day to day middle class and servant class. While I appreciated the rich concepts, insights and wonderful writing, this book was not my favorite read. I found it to be terribly depressing and somewhat hopeless.

Rocket Boys

by Homer H. Hickam Jr.

This one was fun! You may remember the movie October Sky? It was based on this book. I loved it. It is a great coming of age story from the 50's and a time when we were just entering the race's to the moon and nuclear arms. The Cold War was in full swing and the Sock Hop was the social networking tool. This is a story about how boys become men that go on to do great things and which helped to make America the country that we are!

Highly recommend this one!!

A Tale of Two Cities

by Charles Dickens

What can I say? I never read this in high school so I made it the summer selection for our Girl Friends Book Club. I'm really glad I did because I never would have forced myself to read it other wise. At first, I really didn't enjoy it. I found it very difficult with a lot of assumed definitions and facts about that time. I did cut myself some slack by buying the Barnes and Nobel Classic Edition. It has a lot of editorial helps that really did explain so much for me.
By the time that I got to the Third Book I was thoroughly enjoying it. It is such a wonderful love story. If you have a lot of fortitude I recommend it. But this is not your light summer read.

I'm just saying!

Our selection for September?

The Help was really, really good! I am sad that I'm done reading it already!

I started reading A Dog's Purpose but I decided I really didn't like knowing the gross things going on in my dog's heads! So, I put that book down.

I'm searching for a new book to start on now.

Thanks for sharing your reviews!

I just finished Waterfall.

It is AMAZING.

I know it's not your typical genre but you should SO try it:

http://www.amazon.com/Waterfall-Novel-Lisa-T-Bergren/dp/1434764338

It's got romance, history, and adventure.

I love the movie October Sky. I bet the book is so much better. I've heard great things about A Tale of Two Cities, but I never managed to read it. Not sure I could do Dickens right now.

Calling by as another Empty Nester and a participant in the What We Are Reading Linky Party. I am not familiar with the first two authors you mention, but of course you will not be surprised that I am with the third and like his writing. As for The Help this title keeps popping up so often, that I have moved it almost to the top of Mt TBR. Good to meet you and I will be back. :)

I love Dickens - the only one of his books that I've read that I had to put down for a long time before I could finish it was Bleak House.

I know you read Anna Karenina awhile back. I saw the Masterpiece theater movie recently and it is good - makes me want to read the book again.

For my church book club I've read:

Faith Like Potatoes by Angus Buchan
The Morning Gift by Eva Ibbotson
Predator by Terri Blackstock

For my literary book club I've read:

Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald
The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck (second reading for me as I read it for myself last year)

With my girls I've read:

Elsie Dinsmore by Martha Finley (I think you would like this - very old-fashioned and sweet)
The Railway Children by E. Nesbit
Magician's Nephew by C.S. Lewis

For myself I've read:

The Five People you Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom
Bridgette Jones' Diary by Helen Fielding
The Dark Side of Charles Darwin by Jerry Bergman

In preparation for homeschooling I've read:

Say Goodbye to Whining by Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller
The Well-Trained Mind by Susan Wise Bauer
When You Rise Up by R.C. Sproul Jr
The Charlotte Mason Reader by Karen Andreola
